Dr. Butler is the Kenan Distinguished Professor of History and Humanities Department Chair at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida.

On this site, visitors can learn more about his work both in the classroom and beyond, access his published works, watch videos of some selected public lectures, contact him for speaking opportunities, and access various media items (including news stories, podcast interviews, and television appearances) where he has given historical perspectives related to his areas of expertise or provided insights pertaining to how the past continues to influence the present.

Dr. Butler has led several seminars and workshops on the state, local, and national civil rights movement for teachers, scholars, and the general public.

In January 2022, he was scheduled to give a seminar on the topic for a group of K-8 teachers in Osceola County, Florida, when it was cancelled by the county school board for fears that it contained references to “Critical Race Theory.” The cancellation of a history seminar for teachers prior to start of Black History Month for political reasons attracted national, and even international, news. Dr. Butler’s work is meant to showcase often difficult and uncomfortable histories in a political atmosphere where such truth has faced tremendous legislative resistance. He believes that only through encountering our past honestly and within its proper context can we realize the American promise for all people equally.
